Can you believe
it’s already
May? Where
did Spring go? If
you have children in school, May
means trips to the sports fields,
end of the year performances and
awards, nursery school graduations
– generally a crazy/busy time of year
spent “living” in your car. May is also
one of the most beautiful months in
Connecticut, with flowering bushes
and trees coming to full bloom.
Golf courses are getting in shape,
sunlight is lingering a bit longer - May
announces that summer is right
around the corner.
On the church calendar May means
that Easter has passed and we will
soon remember Pentecost and the
release of the Holy Spirit. Our May
calendars also direct us to other days
of remembrance - important events
that we celebrate in our church
services.
This year on the first Sunday of May
we will once again honor our long-
term
Senior Members
. We call this
“Golden Senior Sunday,” because we
take time to give thanks for those
members who have been a part of
our fellowship for 50 years or more.
Noroton has been blessed to have
scores of long-term members (51 in
fact), with our longest membership
now reaching 74 years. All of our
“Golden Seniors” have been here
for at least 1/3 of our 150 year
history: carrying the torch of faith
for a significant stretch of our race.
It is fitting that we take one Sunday
every two years to celebrate these
wonderful servants of God.
The second Sunday of May is always
Mother’s Day. These
Sisters in
Christ
are the bedrock of society
and the foundation of every family.
It was a Presbyterian minister’s son,
President Woodrow Wilson, who
established this holiday in 1914.
Smart man! A Jewish proverb once
said, “God couldn’t be everywhere
so He created mothers!” I’m not
sure if that is good theology but I
know many mothers who have been
partners with the Divine.
The Third Sunday of May this year
is Pentecost - the day we celebrate
the coming of the Holy Spirit. On
Pentecost Sunday we will commission
new
Stephen Ministers
in our church.
Stephen ministers receive 50 hours
of training in care giving and come
along side members when they could
