Children’s Ministry
Minute with Mickie
What’s Happening in Children’s Ministry (
M
y goodness! Here we are in
May, which means we are
almost at the end of our Sunday
School year but ministry to your
children and your family never really
ends. So let’s review some of things we’ve done and are
still doing in 2013.
•
Early Childhood Sunday School.
Preschool Classes
are growing and are well staffed. We started an
older 2’s class this year thanks to the efforts of
Lauren Smith and Amanda Craig. It is clear that we
want to keep this going next year as our older 2
year olds enjoy more intentional teaching and play
time.
•
Grade School Sunday School.
Our 1st-5th grade
children have been learning how to retell the
stories of the Bible. They’ve been learning the
Bible through a variety of activities and methods
of teaching (DVD’s, storyboards, drama, food, and
games). Corporate Worship of
course is still where we begin
our time. Families together in
the Sanctuary is an essential part
of your children’s theological
education. Visit
to use the lessons we use on
Sunday morning at home.
•
JAM (Jesus And Me).
Our Wednesday Music
ministry that included singing, acting and a chime
choir. What a great celebration we had on Palm
Sunday! The JAM Spring Musical will be a great
experience on Sunday June 9.
•
PBS (Puppet Bible Servants).
Four 4th-6th grade
boys are taking Puppetry and serving their church
very seriously. These boys, Ethan Drake, Hayden
Smith, Micah Smith and Spencer Hedges worked
on building clothes racks for our costumes,
organizing closets, practicing Puppetry songs and
actions, and even learning how to interpret Bible
verses to dramatic dowel rod movements. Our
Easter Children’s Chapel reaped the benefit of
their efforts. On May 17-18 these boys and others
interested will attend a Regional Creative Ministry
Conference to learn how to do even more ministry
in creative ways! I’m so proud of them.
•
Take-it-Home-Events.
Monthly we had special
times with parents and children together so that
I could help parents teach their children about
Prayer, Worship,
Devotions,
Blessings, Money,
and the Church.
On April 7 our
biggest Take-it-
Home-Event was
our presentation of Bibles to 2nd Grade children.
•
Vacation Bible School.
June 23-28. As usual, our
VBS is a popular ministry. So popular, in fact that
this year we filled up a month sooner than last
year for our morning program. The great news is
that we still have plenty of openings for our late
afternoon VBS 4-7pm including dinner! We are
also partnering with St. Luke’s Church who is doing
the exact same VBS program the same days and
the same morning times. They still have morning
openings. They are sending us their interested
afternoon families. Visit
to watch
a video explanation of all the VBS options.
•
Kids Learn about Prayer.
For the month of May- June 2nd our Grade School
children will learn all about
the spiritual discipline of
prayer. Watch for flash
paper sins, toothbrushes,
ice cream cones turned
into a cornucopia,
prayer journals and the
importance of popcorn
all as instruments to help
children understand and
get excited about praying
daily.
